■ On the Agenda

Heads of state of the Peace and Security Council met on 13 June, ahead of the 25th AU summit, to discuss the crises in South Sudan and Burundi and to review the fight against terrorism in Africa.
The recent AU summit also included discussions on issues such as the proposed Continental Free Trade Area, alternative sources of funding and the reform of the United Nations Security Council.

■ Situation Analysis

Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir’s attendance of the AU summit in Johannesburg, despite an arrest warrant issued against him by the International Criminal Court, has many longer-term implications.

Despite doubts about the future of the African Capacity for Immediate Response to Crises, heads of state decided that it should be maintained as an interim measure.
