IOM conducted a gate traffic monitoring exercise for six days at the entry and exit points of the POC. The objective of the exercise is to understand the net influx or out flux of the population over a given period of time. The exercise involved counting the number of people who enter and exit the PoC between the 7:00 and 18:00. Figures below are not indicative of the number of new arrivals or number of IDPs who have permanently left the PoC, as the exercise targets everyone moving into and out of the site. As such, the exercise will inevitably double count people who frequently move.
From July 9th to the 14th, the daily average of number of people tracked going into the PoC was 19,372. The daily average number going out was 21,338. This indicates an average net of approximately 2,000 people leaving the PoC during the reporting period. Figure 1 shows an overall decrease in the number of people going into and out of the PoC. Fewer people are moving in and out of the PoC decreased proportionally from a high of 1,900 last week to 1,100 this week for influxes
During the reporting period, influxes into the PoC peaked on the 9th and 10th of July, following shooting in the Nazareth area in Wau town, triggering a higher than average number of people to enter the PoC. The majority of the IDPs who re-turned to the respective camps are not new arrivals, but rather existing residents who had been staying in the vicinity of Nazareth. The total “In” counts stood at 28,000 on July 9th and 19,000 on July 14th. The same applies for the total “Out” counts where there were fewer “Out” recorded this week compared to last week.
The trend of movement into the PoC in the evening has sharply decreased this week. This is maybe due to the fact that the majority of IDPs have brought in most of their belonging from town into the PoC and hence suggesting that most do not need to go back to their homes as frequently.
