Sudan: Health Committee briefed on current cholera situation in South Sudan

Khartoum, 18 August (SUNA) - The Technical committee set to monitor the cholera situation and to take measure on its entering the country listened to reports on measures undertaken to prevent the disease from entering the country from South Sudan.

The meeting held at the ministry of health reviewed the measures taken at the crossing points and borders areas to control any leakage of cases into the country and on measures to be taken by the various states to the same effect.

The state minister for Health, Somia Idris Osman who chaired the meeting said additional measures were taken with regards to passengers coming from a number of African countries after cases of cholera were reported in the republic of Congo.

She said 14 hospitals in Khartoum were equipped to receive cases of cholera and to provide adequate medical treatment and handling for any suspected cases.

The Minister said quantities of chlor were shipped to the various states to help chlorization of the water and ensure provision of safe drinking water.

She called on the various states to stress on the need for environment al hygiene and health education among the various sectors of the communities.

It is to be noted that chlorization is a process chlor is added to water used for drinking and cooking to ensure that it is free of disease causing microorganisms that cause such illnesses as typhoid fever, dysentery, cholera, and gastroenteritis. Ma/ma
