In July 2016, fighting erupted in the capital of South Sudan, Juba, and multiple other locations across the country, causing large-scale displacement. In Juba, humanitarian partners estimate that more than 36,000 people were displaced at the height of the fighting from 7 to 11 July, more than 14,000 of whom remained displaced at the end of July. In Eastern Equatoria, local authorities reported that more than 34,000 people were displaced in Magwi County, more than 4,200 were displaced in Ikotos, around 5,000 were displaced in Torit Town, and the entire population of Pageri Administrative area - estimated to be around 29,500 people - was affected by fighting. In Western Equatoria, some 3,700 people reportedly arrived to Mundri town from neighbouring areas. In central Unity, thousands of civilians were displaced by clashes in mid-July, including from Leer and Mayendit, many of whom fled into the swamps in search of safety. In Western Bahr El Ghazal, further displacement was reported in Raja following clashes on the outskirts of the town on 22 July, and more people arrived at the protected site in Wau seeking humanitarian assistance and protection. In all, more than 60,000 people fled South Sudan as refugees to neighbouring countries during July, primarily to Uganda.
