The Logistics Cluster is responsible for providing logistics coordination, Information Management; and, where there is a gap in logistics infrastructure, WFP, as the lead agency of the Logistics Cluster, acts as a ‘Provider of Last Resort’ by offering common logistics services to support the humanitarian community in their response operations.
Highlights of the Operation
The onset of disputes in Juba in early July significantly impacted humanitarian operations both in Juba and throughout South Sudan. Despite constraints from insecurity and lack of Flight Safety Assurances (FSAs), in July, the Logistics Cluster facilitated the delivery of 200 mt of life saving cargo to 19 destinations on behalf of 19 organisations.
With support from WFP Uganda Country Office and WFP HQ Service Provision, the following services were offered to the humanitarian community in South Sudan on a cost recovery basis: WFP Aviation offered the service to airlift cargo to Juba from Uganda and Kenya and WFP Uganda Country Office offered support for temporary storage in Tororo, Uganda.
The Logistics Cluster shared through the Logistics Cluster mailing list maps of humanitarian organisations’ warehouses and NGO office locations in Juba. Organisations have been asked to submit coordinates so that Wau locations may be mapped as well.
The Logistics Cluster erected two Mobile Storage Units (MSUs) in Wau with an additional one to be constructed (one at WFP Wau and two in the UNMISS base). The new common storage areas will be shared by IOM and Logistics Cluster, and will enhance the capacity for indoor and outdoor common storage for the different humanitarian organisations operating in Wau.
