The Head of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) and Special Representative of the Secretary General (SRSG) is urging the Transitional Government of National Unity (TGoNU) to establish key transitional institutions provided for in the peace agreement.
Addressing the weekly press briefing in Juba, Ellen Magrethe Loej welcomed the formation of the interim government and called for the full implementation of transitional security arrangements to allow people return to their homes.
“I think it I particularly important to ensure that the Joint Operation Centre and the Joint Integrated Police units are established and made operational as soon as possible,” she said.
Ms Loej said the establishment of these institutions would play a critical role in ensuring security and stability in Juba.
On humanitarian access, the UNMISS chief noted that this is still a challenge and urged the TGoNU to ensure the free movement of humanitarian assistance, including removal of all roadblocks preventing prevent vital supplies from reaching people in need.
Ms Loej appealed to the international community to provide the support required to help meet the urgent humanitarian needs.
She noted tackling the deteriorating economy as crucial, with appropriate public financial management reforms and institutions.
“This will give the international community the confidence they need to increase support to South Sudan. It also means restoring access to markets for people, which will play a key role in alleviating suffering and building recovery.
The UNMISS chief recognised the important role played by Presidents Festus Mogae, the Chairman of the Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission (JMEC) and Aplha Omar Konaré, the African Union High Representative for South Sudan, in helping to reach this stage of the peace process.
She called for concerted efforts in relation to national reconciliation and healing should be a priority for all.
“For the sake of the South Sudanese people I have to trust the transitional government that they will implement the peace agreement,”
Ms Loej appealed to the TGoNU to stick to their promises in creating a peaceful and prosperous nation and urged South Sudanese to work together collectively in realizing that dream.
