WFP’s Activities

  • According to WFP and FAO’s newly released joint Crop and Food Security Assessment Mission (CFSAM) report, cereal prices have increased nearly five-fold since early 2015. In addition, there is a cereal deficit of about 381,000 mt, 53 percent greater than in 2015, which aggravates already severe food shortages. The number of wholesale traders and the level of their food stocks have steadily declined in 2015, as a consequence of insecurity, low purchasing power of consumers and difficult access to foreign exchange to buy imports.

  • Since the commencement of the prepositioning exercise in March 2016, over 63,000 mt of assorted food commodities has been dispatched, representing 52% of the total prepositioning requirements. Crossline road convoys have been key to ensuring the efficiency of the exercise. As well, cross-border deliveries of prepositioning commodities through the Northern/Sudan Corridor helps to reduce reliance on costly air operations.
