Some 3.8 million people were estimated to be severely food insecure by April in South Sudan – 3 million in IPC Phase 3 (Crisis) and 800 000 in IPC Phase 4 (Emergency). The situation is rapidly deteriorating as the lean season peaks in July, with up to 4.6 million people facing severe food insecurity. Renewed violence in Unity and Upper Nile States in May forced UN agencies and partner NGOs to rapidly withdraw from the affected areas.

Thousands of people have fled the fighting and are hiding in the bush and swamps, with their food security likely to be severely affected unless the situation improves and displaced rural families can return in time to plant crops for this season. Humanitarian activities have been halted or scaled back significantly in the worst-hit areas. Market disruptions and soaring food prices have been recorded in less affected areas, impairing food access for many poor households whose stocks have run out.
