An independent report on the pre-transitional period has been launched.
The report is based on assessment conducted by the South Sudan Independent Peace Agreement and Monitoring (SSIPAM), an initiative of faith-based groups, civil society organisations and academia.
It studied events since the signing of the peace agreement and came out with recommendations on how the peace process can be carried further.
Mario Arang, the Deputy Director Centre for Peace and Development Studies says the overall recommendation is for the speedy formation of the Transitional Government of National Unity.
“This Transitional Government of National Unity has to be formed so people can move forward, because people are yearning for peace and stability,” he said.
The General Secretary of South Sudan Council of Churches, Father James Oyet echoes Pope Francis’ call for reconciliation.
“People of South Sudan should demonstrate goodwill, work for reconciliation and peace…it is sad when we live in agony,” he said.
Other recommendations include the deployment of the Joint Integrated Police Unit as provided for in the agreement.
The report also recommends an improvement in the flow of information between leadership of the warring parties and their filed commanders.
The SSIPAM is expected to continue producing reports and analysis on the implementation of the peace agreement with specific recommendations for action.
The next report will have updates on the steps taken to implement provisions of the pre-transitional period and focus on post-transitional period obligations of the parties to the agreement.
