SITUATION OVERVIEW

More than 2.1 million people have fled their homes since fighting broke out in December 2013, with over 1.54 million displaced inside South Sudan. Nearly 137,000 people are currently sheltering in Protection of Civilians (PoC) sites. This is an increase of nearly 34,000 people since January 2015.

The conflict and economic stress have dramatically deepened existing vulnerabilities. An estimated 4.6 million people will face severe food insecurity by July 2015. This is the highest number of people at crisis or emergency levels of food insecurity since the start of the conflict. Also, the nutrition situation is worsening and one in three children under 5 suffers acute malnutrition in the worst-hit areas of Greater Upper Nile, Warrap & Northern Bahr el Ghazal.

The Humanitarian Response Plan for 2015 aims to reach some 4.6 million people with humanitarian assistance. As of 15 June, some US$663 million had been secured, equivalent to 41 per cent of the total requirement of $1.63 billion.

The objectives of the aid operation are to save lives and alleviate suffering; protect the rights of the most vulnerable, including their freedom of movement; and protect, restore and promote livelihoods
