Kakuma refugee camp located at the heart of Turkana, Kenya, hosts more than 181 thousand refugees from 21 nationalities. Due to high influx of South Sudanese this prolonged camp is suffering from congestion and limited humanitarian aid at all times. To respond, Good Neighbors International (GNI) launched its assistance program in Kakuma last year, and has been providing safe shelters to protracted refugees in Kakuma 1.
Working with KOICA (Korea International Cooperation Agency), GNI supported 215 T-shelters last February for most vulnerable population in Kakuma 1, such as female headed families, unaccompanied minor caring families, and family with the differently abled. Also its second shelter project benefiting 204 refugee families has completed last August.
After completion of the second shelter project, GNI endeavor to fill the gaps of education and child protection in the next phase. Especially schools with children programs pursuing harmonized lives with host communities is in the planning stage. Through various projects GNI will strive to strengthen the child protection scheme in Kakuma.
GNI is an international humanitarian and development organization. It has made great strides in its mission by providing people around the world with a better quality of life since its establishment in Korea, 1991. GNI was granted General Consultative Status with the UN ECOSOC in 1996 and acknowledged its contribution and granted the “MDGs Award’ in 2007.
